In a world cup in which much heralded players such as Ronaldo and Rooney have been less than impressive, one stand out performer has been France's Karim Benzema.
Although Benzema could be faulted for missing a penalty against Switzerland, the French star shone in his side's first two games. In France's first game, an own goal by Honduras could justifiably have been credited to Benzema. Another goal against Switzerland was refused coming as it did in the last second of that game.
However, while several other French players, such as Matuidi and Valbuena, have been great, critics may point out that the side has not played against very strong opposition so far (though the Swiss are a strong side, if only on paper). In this regard, some may make a case for Robben to be considered alongside Benzema as the most valuable attacking player of the world cup in the group stage. Especially in the Dutch side's 2-0 win over Chile, Robben stood out for his unselfish play.
But apart from his strikes, Benzema has also been impressive with the assists he has made. Even when France were 5-0 up against Switzerland, the player put the team above his personal interest and passed the ball in the box if he thought another player was in a better position.
