Chivas takes the field at StubHub Center.

As part of the U.S. summer Chivas pre-season tour Club Deportivo Guadalajara took on Cruz Azul in LA's StubHub Center in front of a crowd 19,427 on Wednesday night. Chivas got a morale boosting 2-0 win over Mexico City based Cruz Azul.

Both teams presented strong lineups as their managers look to get their 'A' teams ready for the kickoff of the Apertura 2014 season which is only 9 days away. The crowd also made a huge showing for both sides at the StubHub Center. The crown was evenly split and while the stadium was not officially sold out; you could never tell based on noise level alone.

The match started out very even between the two sides. Both squads looked to push forward causing an enjoyable back and fourth rhythm to the match. Cruz Azul were the ones who looked to reach the rival's penalty box a bit easier. Alejandro Vela showed up in the back post on a couple of occasions, his first - the most clear - chance, he sent a volley over the cross bar. His second, a  scissors kick was easily saved.

A huge Cruz Azul defensive mistake when the center backs could not clear the ball properly was taken advantage by Chivas striker Aldo de Nigris as he took the ball and chipped the rushing goalkeeper to open the scoring.

Cruz Azul had a a couple more chances at the end of the first half that forced returning goalkeeper Luis Ernesto Mitchel into some quality saves, but the Guadalajara side took the one goal lead to the break.

In the second half, following plenty of substitutions Cruz Azul looked to push forward in search of the equalizing goal. The Chivas defense stood their ground and held back the Azul attacks. The Guadalajara side meanwhile looked for counterattacks that might decide the match in their favor.

They found such counter in the 72nd minute when a long Fernando Arce cross from the right side of the field found Omar Bravo on the other side of the field. The Chivas captain volleyed the ball right between the goalkeeper's hand and foot to double the Chivas lead.

With the two goal advantage, Chivas relaxed a bit and Cruz Azul found a hope-giving goal in the 83rd minute when Pablo Barrera was able to tap in a cross from a cross that came in from the right.

Cruz Azul were desperate for an equalizer in the final minutes, but that desperation only caused the players to commit a lot of fouls. Chivas was able to hang on to take the 2-1 win.
