Cruz Azul and Pachuca look to continue last season's good form in opener

Cruz Azul 2-2 Pachuca

Mexico City giants Cruz Azul receive the visit from last season's runners-up finishers Pachuca in their opening match of the new Clausura 2014 season. Both teams will be looking to build off of last season's success and start with three points this new campaign.

The match is scheduled for Saturday July 19th at 6:00pm ET / 3:00pm PT from the Estadio Azul in Mexico City. The game will be televised live in the USA on Univision.

During his first season back in charge of Cruz Azul, Olympic Gold Medal manager Luis Fernando Tena was able to lead the club to the top of the league table as well as the CONCACAF Champion's League trophy. They along with Toluca completely dominated the league from start to finish (during the regular season); but were then bounced out of the playoffs by the 8th seed and eventual champions Leon.

Due to their shortcomings in the playoffs, the dominate Cruz Azul will now celebrate 17 years without a league title this December. Tena will have to get this 'machine' rolling again with that dominate pace they had to ease some of that lingering playoff frustration.

Pachuca will be full of confidence after having reached the championship final last season despite being on the verge of not qualifying to the playoffs with 15 minutes to go in the final match day of the regular season. Their squad, which is full of youth, is only expected to get better with each passing game. Although, the club might struggle now that they have sold the league's Golden Boot winner Enner Valencia to EPL's West Ham United.
