Julio Cesar PK shootout heroics send Brazil to quarterfinals

  1. Host nation Brazil advanced to the quarterfinals of the FIFA World Cup with a penalty shootout win over fellow CONMEBOL outfit Chile.

  2. The match was a tight and heated affair since the national anthems, where both sets of fans tried to keep signing their national song after the music had ended while the other set booed. A very disrespectful showing from both sides prior to kicking off the knockout rounds of the World Cup.

The match itself took a similar tone on the field as both teams came out eager and a little rough. Fouls on both sides that merited yellow cards were let go by center referee Howard Webb.

Webb also waived play on during two controversial moments at each penalty box. Chile's Vargas seemed to be pushed from behind when running up to a low cross. Minutes later at the other end Hulk seemed to suffer a similar fate getting pushed down. But the English referee did not grant either side a penalty.

The home side brought all of its fans to ecstasy in the 17th minute after a corner kick. Thiago Silva flicked the ball in the center of the box and David Luis found a way to get the ball into the back of the net at the back post to give Brazil the one goal lead.

  3. Following the goal Chile pushed forward but with caution, this forced Brazil to commit plenty of fouls to cut down the Chilean attacks. Neymar and his speed looked dangerous in counterattacks with all of the spaces that the "Red Wave" was leaving behind.

Chile did find their reward for their risk. In the 31st minute Barcelona FC midfielder Alexis Sanchez took advantage of a defensive give away and slotted the ball past Julio Cesar to tie the match.

  4. For the remainder of the first half both sides had their chances, but it was Chile who looked more dangerous. But neither team was able to break the deadlock before the break.

The second half started just as intense as the first half had been played out. Chile were slightly in control of the early minutes, but Brazil's danger still came from fast counterattacks, especially through their emblematic Neymar.

Brazil thought they had taken a 2-1 lead in the 54th minute when a quick long pass to Hulk surprised the Chilean defense. The Brazilian forward had trouble controlling the ball as well as shooting, but  it still found a way to roll into the corner of the goal. Center referee however, waived off the goal and showed Hulk a yellow card because he considered the forward had controlled the ball with his hand/arm. Replays show that Webb had a point.

Chile continued to dominate the match and in the 64th minute Brazil required a huge save from their goalkeeper Julio Cesar to keep the match leveled. Julio Cesar had to stand his ground and face a point blank range shot from Aranguiz.

Brazil answered back with a another long cross this time from Neymar on the right side trying to find second half sub Jo who could not control despite being practically all alone in the box in the 74th minute. Hulk had another huge chance late in the game in the 83rd as Hulk fired a rocket of a shot from inside of the box that Claudio Bravo was able to make a spectacular save from.

Despite the isolated chances Chile continued their dominance and pushed Brazil all of the way back during the final minutes of regulation. Wave after wave of Chilean attacks came over Brazil who looked like they just wanted to survive until the 90th minute to take the game to extra time.

In extra time both teams showed big signs of fatigue, especially Chile who had dominated the second forty-five minutes.  Brazil dominated the first 15 minutes of extra time pushing Chile back but not being able to break through the stiff defense.

In the second half of extra time the home side continued with their slight dominance but the fatigue had already hit the Brazilians like it had done the Chileans during the first period of extra time.

Late substitute Pinilla had the game winning goal in his boots in the final minute of extra-time after a give and go with Alexis Sanchez. But the shot slammed off of the cross bar to save the home side.

In the ensuing penalty kicks :

    - Chile's Mauricio Pinilla had his shot saved by Julio Cesar after shooting down the middle.

    - Brazil's Willian put the ball wide of the goal.

    - Barcelona star Alexis Sanchez had his shot saved by Julio Cesar.

    - Hulk stepped up to give Brazil a two goal lead but had his shot bounced off the foot of Claudio Bravo.

    - Jaras slammed the final kick off of the post.
