There's plenty of Philadelphia Union news making the rounds this week, with questions over the return of Carlos Valdes and a critical home game against rival New York Red Bulls on Wednesday night.
This news came down on Monday afternoon, when the 'Union Rumors' twitter account shared a photo from Saturday's game at PPL Park, originally taken by Philadelphia fan Mike Coffman. In an attempt to identify the player circled in the picture, fans and writers pointed out that the person to his LEFT (with the backwards hat) might be Algerian national team goalkeeper Rais M'Bolhi. The pair were spotted in the luxury box of Union CEO and Operating Partner Nick Sakiewicz.
M'Bolhi was the starting goalkeeper for the Algeria team that reached the knockout rounds of this World Cup.
He's been linked with a move away from CSKA Sofia, with Portuguese newspaper 'A Bola' reporting interest from FC Porto. Reports from France named Philadelphia as a possible destination and even suggested that an offer had already been made.
Though he's linked with Porto, an offer from Philadelphia Union in the MLS has reached Rais M'Bolhi. Considering his options at the moment.— Maher Mezahi (@MezahiMaher) July 10, 2014
On the surface, a move for a veteran goalkeeper seems unnecessary for the Union. Philadelphia currently has starter Zac MacMath and #1 overall draft pick Andre Blake on the roster, along with third stringer Brian Holt. A reach for M'Bolhi would surely mean that either Blake or MacMath would be traded or transferred. Philadelphia signed former Eintracht Frankfurt goalkeeper Oka Nikolov during last Summer's transfer window, but he ended up leaving the club without making a single MLS appearance.
