Soccer fever is starting to hit Miami. While David Beckham's MLS expansion team will have to wait a couple of more years, this summer, the city will host four international games including a match between Barcelona and Real Madrid legends that was just announced earlier this week.
Luis Figo, who played for both Barcelona and then Real Madrid, is in town to promote the Miami Legends Cup. Marlins Park will be the place where people in the area will have the chance to experience this once in a lifetime event. The match is scheduled for September 11th.
To some, the idea of watching retired footballers play a friendly might not be so appealing, but after reviewing the list of players on both sides, the match turns promising. Many of the players to feature in this match are still in their thirties and look fit to play at top level. Even the 41-year old Figo called the attention of local media with his formidable body shape.
Hugo Sanchez has been named Real Madrid's manager for the Miami Legends Cup. Bodo Illgner (GK), Steve McManaman, Christian Karembeu, Fernando Morientes, Luis Figo (pictured above), Ruben De La Red, Guti, Michel Salgado, Ivan Zamorano, Fernando Redondo, and Fabio Cannavaro have all confirmed their presence so far.
On Barcelona's bench will be one of the club's most emblematic players, Carlos Rexach, who will have a younger squad on his side. Vitor Baia, Henrik Larsson, Luis Garcia (pictured above), Deco, Guily, Juliano Belletti, Francesco Coco, Santi Ezquerro, and Gerard Lopez have been announced for Barcelona.
For the Miami Legends Cup, prices range from $40-$175 for the lower side seating behind the benches.
The other matches scheduled in Miami for the next three months are:
July 23: Atletico Nacional (COL) v AS Monaco (FRA)
August 4: International Champions Cup Final (TBA)
September 5: Brazil v Colombia (World Cup quarterfinal rematch)
