Can you feel that? It´s the jitters that more than 40 million Argentineans feel as the World Cup nears and Argentina gets ready for the World Cup with its first of two friendlies tonight against Trinidad and Tobago before heading to Brazil.
Argentina will employ its usual 4-3-3 scheme and its probable starting lineup to face Trinidad has Romero as the starting goalkeeper; Campagnaro, Fernandez, Demichelis and Rojo on defense; Gago, Mascherano and Di Maria as midfielders; Messi, Higuain and Palacio up front.
The most notable absences are those of Sergio Aguero and Pablo Zabaleta, while Demichelis has his first shot to prove he can be the starter on defense over Ezequiel Garay.
This will be the first of two friendlies, the second one being against Slovenia on Saturday, as part of a send-off series for Argentina in front of their home fans before their World Cup debut against Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The main focus for Argentina in this matchup isn’t to take stock of its level of play or even about the final result, since the lower quality of opponent won't really allow them to do so, but rather to stay healthy and get their legs under them once again after their mini preseason in Buenos Aires.
Having said that, a good performance for Argentina would help quell worries considering that Argentina’s last friendly was a 0-0 tie against Romania that left a sour taste in their mouth considering the struggles on defense.
This is the beginning of the last turn for Argentina before heading into the home stretch, the final week before a World Cup where they carry maybe their highest expectations ever.
