A 55th-minute goal from Arturo Gonzalez was enough to propel Atlas to a 1-0 victory against Pumas. The victory was Rojinegros' third straight as they kept pace with leaders America, who still are on a 100% record.
The loss was El Club Universidad's (CU's) third straight defeat and one which might have been manager Jose Luis Trejo's last as the Pumas tactician. CU will likely remain in 15th place, but can drop to 16th depending on how the Leones Negros fare in their match against Toluca later on Sunday.
Pumas started the first half by taking away Atlas's biggest advantage-- their possession. Pumas made use of that possession to create the best early chance of the first half to that point, when Pumas worked the ball around to Matias Britos just outside the 18. But his shot was easily caught by Federico Vilar.
Pumas and Atlas then took turns at the counter-attacking game, which produced the home side's next chance. In the 40th minute when one such counter attack resulted in a cross from Daniel Luduena that found the head of Matias Britos, but the Uruguayan put his header over the bar.
Atlas had its best chance of a scoreless first half six minutes later, when Aldo Leao played in Maikon Leite on Alejandro Palacios's goal, but the Brazilian striker missed the target, although it appeared to be close to forcing a save from the Pumas keeper.
Ten minutes after the second half began, Atlas opened the scoring. Captain Rodrigo Millar successfully pressured the ball in the Pumas defensive half from the Pumas midfield and slotted a throughball to Arturo 'Poncho' Gonzalez, who coolly slotted the ball past Alejandro Palacios to give the Zorros the 1-0 lead. Maikon Leite nearly doubled the Atlas lead four minutes later, when Maikon Leite tried a shot from an attack out wide. But Leite's shot hit the post.
Atlas were keen to either knock the ball around, or let Pumas attack them throughout the latter stages of the match. The CU came closest to equalizing in the 82nd minute. when Daniel Luduena's wide shot/cross forced a save from Federico Vilar.
Pumas have a short week, as they travel to the Nou Camp to take on Leon on Thursday, August 14. Atlas return to the Estadio Jalisco to take on Guadalajara rivals and Liga MX strugglers Leones Negros on Saturday, August 16.
