Mulholland Comes to RSL with Good Pedigree

Real Salt Lake coach Jeff Cassar added a new face to his squad today, by signing attacking midfielder Luke Mulholland, who arrived from the Tampa Bay Rowdies.
Mulholland joins eight other midfielders on RSL's current roster, indicating that Cassar and his staff are looking for some additional depth there after cutting ties with Khari Stephenson and Yordany Alvarez after the 2013 season.
The Englishman's attacking versatility should serve him well at Real, as he has also played up front during his professional career and did so on occasions at his previous club when they won the 2012 NASL Title.
If Cassar retains the diamond midfield formation that RSL has used for the last several years, Mulholland's ability to adapt to different positions could be a valuable asset. Given Real's current slate of strikers, it's unlikely that Mulholland would need to be used up top, but he could provide cover there in case of injuries and international absences.
Defender Daniel Scott played in that Rowdies title winning side.
Scott, whose brother Zach played against Mulholland for the Seattle Sounders in the Rowdies 1-0 win over the MLS side in the 2013 US Open Cup (photo above), has no doubt that Mulholland has every chance of being a success in the top tier:
"Luke is the kind of player that every midfield needs. Although primarily known at Tampa for his attacking capabilities he also covers a lot of ground on the defensive side of the ball. He works extremely hard on the pitch and is a nuisance to play against. He had a lot of success in Tampa and there's no doubt he'll have a smooth transition into the MLS if he stays focused and continues to push himself each day."
With another star of that 2012 Tampa NASL title winning side, goalkeeper Jeff Attinella, already at the club, Mulholland's acclimation into the RSL family should be seamless.
