Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo was over the moon to get his hands on the UEFA Super Cup after Real Madrid's victory over Sevilla, as it was one of the few club trophies he had yet to win.
"It's a trophy that was missing on my CV and I really wanted to win it", Ronaldo told the Spanish public broadcaster TVE after bagging both goals to seal glory for his side in Cardiff. "We've begun the season on the right foot; we couldn't have asked for a better start", the forward added after Real claimed victory in their first competitive fixture of the campaign.
CR7 looked extremely lively throughout the match and went some way towards burying the ghosts of earlier in the summer, having been hampered by injury at the World Cup and failed to lead Portugal beyond the group phase in Brazil. "What's done is done. I had problems, but it's water under the bridge now. I helped the team win today and scored two important goals", he stated. On the subject of his fitness, Ronaldo said, "I've still got a long way to go but I'm feeling better". Asked about the knock to his head sustained in a challenge with Nicolás Pareja, he noted, "I was feeling a bit dizzy, but a bit of champagne ought to do the trick. The team played really well tonight and this will give us confidence going into the rest of the season", he concluded.
