Clint Dempsey's goal in the 81st minute generated more than 300,000 messages on Twitter. That's the second highest peak on the social media network since the World Cup started.

Cristiano Ronaldo didn't have the momentum of Dempsey, but he won the battle of total mentions with almost 1.5 million.

The entire USA vs Portugal match also generated quite the buzz on social media that has become the preferred forum for fans that follow soccer.  

And finally, Twitter also released the top three mentioned players for each side. Not surprisingly, the four goalscorers made the list along with USA savior Tim Howard and Cristiano Ronaldo.
