After a two-week hiatus for the international break, Liga MX returns this weekend with the thirteenth round of fixtures.

Club Leon vs Pumas UNAM (Saturday, 9:05pm EDT)

Matias Britos, Pumas

The headline fixture is undoubtedly Pumas’ trip to Leon on Saturday night. The two sides occupy the top two places in the standings, and a victory for either would put them on the brink of Liguilla qualification.

Although only one point separates them, there is a huge gap between their respective goal differences. Pumas currently sit on +14, having conceded just 13 times all season. Leon have a mere +1, having shipped 23 goals. It’s the worst defensive record in the entire league, making it all the more remarkable that they are so near the division’s summit.

In truth, both sides are almost certain to qualify for the post-season regardless of the result, but if Los Panzas Verdes cannot fix their defensive woes it wouldn’t be surprising to see their playoff journey cut short in the quarter-finals.

Prediction: Club Leon 1-2 Pumas UNAM

Cruz Azul vs Dorados (Saturday, 6pm EDT)

Dorados, Apertura 2015 tournament

Rivaling Leon vs Pumas for the weekend’s top fixture is the tie between Cruz Azul and Dorados in Mexico City.

Ordinarily, the game wouldn’t attract a great deal of interest outside of the two fan bases, but the appointment of Tomas Boy to La Maquina over the international break has made it noteworthy.

The fact that Cruz Azul opted to change managers should not be surprising. Sergio Bueno’s stewardship had entered a rut, and the side had won just one of their previous eight games. It was a sequence of results that saw them plummet in the standings, and they go into the game against Dorados down in 16th spot, just two points ahead of their newly-promoted opponents.

Boy will certainly invigorate the team and the fans, but whether he has enough time to reverse their poor form remains to be seen.

Prediction: Cruz Azul 3-0 Dorados

Chivas vs Puebla (Sunday, 6pm EDT)

Omar Bravo, Chivas

Chivas’ form has improved in recent weeks since the sacking of Chepo de la Torre and the arrival of Matias Almyeda, but they were given a reality-check last time out when Pumas ended their three-game winning streak with a 1-0 win at the Estadio Olimpico.

This weekend they host Puebla – a side with whom they’ve been locked in a relegation battle for the last 18 months. Both teams narrowly avoided the drop last season as Leones Negros were sent down to the Ascenso MX, but neither are out of the woods this season.

Chivas are 16th in the Tabla de Descenso with a coefficient of 1.1375, while Puebla are one place above them with 1.1500. Only Morelia (1.1000) and Dorados (0.8182) are below them.

With every point vital, especially in games against each other, both will want to ensure they take the victory.

Prediction: Chivas 0-1 Puebla
