There is no denying which game takes the top billing in Week 10 of the 2015 Apertura in Mexico, with Chivas traveling to America for this season’s installment of the Clasico Nacional.

Club America vs Chivas (Saturday, 6pm EDT)

Club America vs Chivas

The two most famous Mexican clubs, the two most successful Mexican clubs, the two most supported Mexican clubs. No other game in the Liga MX calendar has the ability to bring Mexico to a standstill quite like the Super Clasico between America and Chivas.

The fortunes of the two clubs couldn’t be more contrasting over recent years. America have mostly been stable, well-run, and successful. Chivas have be a lurching train-wreck that’ve stumbled between chaos and crisis ad nauseam.

Since Chivas won their last title in 2006, America have won three league titles and a Champions League – claiming Chivas’ record of “most successful Mexican side” in the process. To rub salt into Chivas’ wounds, they’ve been involved in a relegation battle for the last 18 months.

The two teams go into the game this weekend at opposite ends of the table – America are third, Chivas are 13th. However, despite the doom and gloom at Los Rojiblancos, there are some glimmers of hope. They’ve won their last two games under new boss Matias Almeyda, including a good 2-1 away win at Morelia in midweek that sent them through to the quarter-finals of the Copa MX, and have generally looked a more cohesive unit than at the end of the Chepo era.

America are surely favorites though. They’ve won six of their last seven league games, with the only blip coming when they were reduced to nine men and lost 1-0 at home to Tigres.

Regardless of the score, it’ll be an occasion to savor.

Prediction: America 3-0 Chivas

Pumas UNAM vs Tigres UANL (Sunday, 1pm EDT)

Pumas vs Tigres

Away from the spotlight of the Clasico Nacional, there is another vital top-of-the-table clash happening this weekend between the two foremost university sides – Pumas and Tigres.

Pumas have been near the top of the table since Week 1, with their loss to Cruz Azul last weekend marking their first defeat in six games. Despite that, there’s been a nagging feeling that they’ve been over-performing and have been aided in bid to stay at the top of the standings by the underperformance of perennial contenders such as Santos Laguna, Pachuca, and Monterrey.

Tigres are the most in-form side in the league, with last weekend’s win over Rayados in the Clasico Regiomontano being their fifth successive victory. A win this weekend would catapult them above their opponents and be guaranteed to leave them inside the top three.

If anything, Tigres weak spot is their away form. They’ve scored 14 in 5 at home, but just 4 in 4 on the road, while Pumas are yet to concede a goal at home. It’s certain to be a tight affair.

Prediction: Pumas UNAM 1-1 Tigres UANL

Atlas vs Veracruz (Saturday, 9:30pm EDT)

Atlas vs Veracruz

Further down the table the race for a Liguilla place is heating up. Just four points separate Tigres in fourth (16) from Morelia in 11th (12). It means there is a lot still up for grabs.

Two of the teams that will be hoping to snatch one of those places go head-to-head this weekend when Veracruz visit Atlas.

Atlas have found some form after a shaky start. They’ve not lost in their last three, won their last two, and have moved up to eighth spot. Veracruz are struggling for consistency but are still amassing enough points to stay in the hunt. They are currently sixth.

A win for Atlas could leave them in the four, depending on other results. A loss could drop them as low as 15th.

Prediction: Atlas 2-1 Veracruz
