The Netherlands secured a perfect run to the group stages as a Leroy Fer header helped secure a narrow 2-0 win against Chile in Monday’s closing match in Group B that leaves the European’s a top their group with 9 points.
Having both won their opening two matches, the Chilean squad was in need of a victory over Louis van Gaal’s men if they were to secure their place a top the group; seeing as how a draw would leave the Dutch on top due to goal difference.
The South Americans kicked things off quickly in their traditional quick-pace attacking style down the wings. Meanwhile, the Oranje held their defensive line, withstanding the Chileans’ early attempts and aiming to capitalize on the counter attack.
Aside from a Stefan de Vrij header and a brilliant individual run from Arjen Robben, both teams went into the second half without causing any real danger.
The second half was more of the same as it appeared both teams would be splitting points after an equally fought match. However, substitute Leroy Fer became the hero in the 77th minute. The Norwich midfielder headed in a prefabricated play to give the Netherlands the win.
Chile continued to fight on, hoping to make a miracle but Memphis Depay ended all hope after finishing off another brilliant counter attack rub by Robben, and cementing the 2-0 win securing Netherlands will face Group A's second place.
