Real Esteli and Sporting Kansas exchanged early goals in the first half to settle the 1-1 score at the Independencia Stadium in Esteli, Nicaragua.
In the sixth minute of play, the home team took the lead through an unfortunate own goal when Jon Kempin's save bounced off of Sporting's Honduran midfielder, Jorge Claros, who was chasing down his mark.
Sporting Kansas City leveled the score just ten minutes later through a brilliant Toni Dovale left-footed free kick that left Real Esteli's goalkeeper, Justo Lorente, standing.
Real Esteli intensified their offensive efforts through the remainder of the match, but a couple of Kempin's interventions and the bad aim of the Nicaraguan strikers combined helped SKC take a valuable point.
The Nicaraguan club now leads Group 2 with a pair of points, while Saprissa and Sporting Kansas each have one. Real Esteli is the only team in the group that has played two games already.
Sporting Kansas will host Saprissa and Real Esteli back-to-back on September 18th and 23rd respectively.
Meanwhile, Saprissa will host the Nicaraguans next Tuesday at the Ricardo Saprissa Stadium in Costa Rica.
