Paraguayan Pablo Velasquez continued where he left off last season, scoring goals.  The Apertura 2013 goal scoring champ was just as dangerous in week 1 of the Clausura 2014 of La Liga MX.  Toluca FC defeated CF Pachuca 1-0 at the Hidalgo Stadium as the Red Devils look to conquer the league this year.

The score shows a victory for Toluca but the game was well contested.  While the team lost, Pachuca generated the better plays.  The home side had a constant attacker with Enrique Esqueda.  The striker gave quite a show on attack, but could not get past goalkeeper Alfredo Talavera.

Pachuca was constant on the attack, something different from their performance last season.  The locals had several players on the pitch that look like they'll improve for the sake squad with a bit more game time.  Despite having control of the ball, luck was not on their side.

“Pachuca played well, but they couldn’t score,” Toluca coach Jose Saturnino Cardozo said.  “You’ve got to be smart and lethal on attack.  The game changer was the goal because our rival played very well.  They were superior in the first half.”

An error cost the home-side the game in the 75th minute.  Velasquez took advantage of the bad play from the Pachuca defense to shoot the ball past Oscar “Conejo” Perez for the lone goal of the game.  Merits for the 40 year-old Perez who still continues to play, but he may want to consider giving up his spot to a younger player.

With the goal aside, Pachuca played a good game beating out their opposition.  But they lacked in the final drive.  That is something you don’t do against a team with an opportunistic player like Velasquez who took advantage of his chance.  In the last six encounters between these squads there has always been a victor.  For Toluca, this is the first time the 'choriceros' have won at the Hidalgo stadium since the Apertura 2007 season.

This is a good start for Cardozo’s team.  Toluca had a good Apertura 2013 reaching the semifinals before falling to runners-up Club America.  Toluca will host Monarcas Morelia in week 2 action.  Pachuca will travel to Monterrey to take on Tigres UANL.
