Portland Timbers 1 : 1 Philadelphia Union

Jack McInerney may have scored the goal but Philadelphia's opening day win in Portland was undoubtedly the Cristian Maidana show. The Argentinian showed a guile and creativity that stamped himself on a strong Portland midfield throughout and eventually crafted what was so nearly the defining moment of this match.

In doing so, he also saved the Eastern Conference from an opening day whitewash by their Western counterparts.

However, as in central Cascadia earlier today, a goal deep into stoppage time for the home side stopped the presses. As the clock ticked down, another native of Argentina, Gaston Fernandez, headed in from a right wing corner after a lazy attempt to intercept by a defender.

The points were shared and probably deservedly so.

The starting line ups were full of promise. Newcomers Fernandez and Norberto Paparatto for the Timbers, while Maidana, US international Maurice Edu and Vincent Nogueira made their Philly debuts.
