“El Clásico”, Real Madrid vs. Barcelona is the match everyone is waiting for, and the first sign that the cold winter is behind us, spring is here, flowers bloom, romance is in the air, all that good stuff. However, there is no love lost between these two teams.

Sunday, March 23 has been circled in every football fan’s calendar ever since La Liga schedule came out, but few could have imagined that this Week 29 match-up would be as pivotal as it is at the moment. Real Madrid is currently firmly established in first place with 70 points, followed closely by Barcelona with 66.

There is also a sneaky second place team called Atletico Madrid lurking in second place with 67 points, and they play Betis at home four hours earlier. Hypothetically, they could win and transfer all the pressure to Real Madrid, which would enter its encounter against their arch-rival with Atletico firmly alongside them in first place and the possibility that a loss at home in the Santiago Bernabeu could set up a mad sprint to the finish with Barcelona just one point behind both of them.

So no pressure or anything, just a run-of-the-mill, league title could be at stake kind of match for both teams. Let’s check out the top 3 story-lines as we approach what will be the most watched soccer match of the year so far.

1. Messi vs. Cristiano Ronaldo: Clash of the Titans at Bernabeu

The rivalry between the world’s two best players has undergone a lot of phases, but most of them have seen Messi as Ronaldo’s tormentor. However, this time around it seems that CR7 has the upper hand.

Cristiano is currently not only the proud owner of the 2014 Ballon D’Or, but his team is also the league leader with him as the “Pichichi” (top scorer) with 25 goals, seven ahead of Messi, who is in third place with 18.
