It has been a difficult season for Walter Mazzarri in his first season with Inter.

He left a Champions League club in Napoli to join an Inter team that has been trying to rebuild since the day they lifted the Champions League trophy in Madrid under Jose Mourinho. The current campaign has been full of ups and downs that include a derby win against their rivals, Milan, but is full of inconsistency and controversy. The biggest move the team made in the January transfer window was signing Brazilian international Hernanes from Lazio. The midfielder made his debut for Inter on Sunday as the team were able to end a recent slump and defeat Sassuolo 1-0.

The first time Inter met Sassuolo this season, Walter Mazzarri's men demolished their opponents in a 7-0 romping.  Sunday's return match at the San Siro was not quite as convincing a win as Walter Samuel scored the game's only goal and Inter got the win in Hernanes' first game. There were definitely some anxious moments in this one for Inter fans, but they will be happy to come away with all three points and get back on track. The win also put the club into fifth place in the Serie A table as Hellas Verona drew 2-2 with Juventus on Sunday.

Inter are not competing in Europe this year and have already been eliminated from the Coppa Italia. It is for this reason that they must focus on trying to achieve European qualification for next season through Serie A. They currently sit level on points with Hellas Verona on 36 points. However, they have Torino, Parma, and Lazio sitting right behind them, while they sit 8 points back of 4th placed Fiorentina. Inter will not have it easy down the stretch but with nothing else to play for, a European spot should be a very attainable target.

Hernanes looked decent in his first game with Inter has he created several opportunities and nearly scored . His former head coach Edy Reja implements a very familiar 3-5-2 formation as Walter Mazzarri and the player should not find it too difficult to adjust to the Italian's tactics. He will provide Inter a much added boost for the second half of the season, and while Inter may not have destroyed Sassuolo, they did get all three points and what else really matters?
